Why does D’Youville have blog software?

Today’s students are learning more technology than yesterday’s students, and most people, whatever their field may be, will be using higher technology in their jobs than their predecessors ever did. Today’s web sites even function at a higher level than yesterday’s web sites, so the term Web 2.0 was coined.

What is Web 2.0?

An entry on Wikipedia defines Web 2.0 as:

Web 2.0, a phrase coined by O’Reilly Media in 2004, refers to a perceived or proposed second generation of Web-based services—such as social networking sites, wikis, communication tools, and folksonomies—that emphasize online collaboration and sharing among users.

In fact, Wikipedia itself is a good illustration of what Web 2.0 can do. It is multi-user and continually updated.

Can’t we stick with Web 1.0?
In fact, if your academic project doesn’t require “social networking” and “wiki” features, you can turn them off in your WordPress account, which will make your web site look and act more Web 1.0.

Who can help me?
Instructional Support Services will be offering seminars on how to use WordPress, but the reason we chose to start using this robust software is that there is a large and very active community of users online at WordPress.org where most of the questions you will come up with have already been answered. In fact, if we can’t answer your questions from our own experience and knowledge base, we’ll be searching the forums at WordPress.org to help you.
